Europe’s Large Hydro Power Plant – a View on the Alpine Construction Site

Switzerland’s largest and most powerful hydro power plant is being built under the project name «Linthal 2015». An underground pumped-storage hydro power plant will pump water out of Lake Limmern back to Lake Mutt which is located 600 m higher up. From, here it will descend again, producing electrical power. FormworkPress reported on progress of the underground works in the caverns. These are currently undergoing finishing works. Concrete works on the outlet and inlet structures on Lake Mutt are proceeding on schedule.The photographs show the site at level 2. During level 1 works, single-sided walls up to 11.25 m and double-sided walls up to 12.75 m were poured using the support frame STB 450 and its 1.50 m extensions plus the wall formwork Mammut 350. The formwork had to master exceptional concrete pressures during the pours.

Climbing scaffold KLK 230 and Mammut 350 wall formwork Also on level, the working platform KLK 230 was pre-assembled to a height of 2.50 m and then lifted into pouring position. On it, Mammut 350 wall formwork panels were placed to a height of 7.00 m. The rounded and elliptical geometries of the inlet and outlet structures made planning the formwork solution with the KLK scaffold platforms quite a challenge. Wooden boxouts were mounted on to the wall panels in order to form the rounded concrete shapes. The circular formwork Circo was also employed for radii from 1.00 m. Finally, the Mammut 350 came into use again to pour the beams between the wall and column structures. Cramped alpine conditions, extreme concrete pressures and confined space for moving the formwork require careful logistics planning to keep work flow smooth and pour results superior.
